Updated 18:00: Khalil-Ur Rahman was found safe on Ryde Esplanade this afternoon (Sunday) by police. He is being taken to hospital. Police would like to thank the public for their assistance with the appeal.

Police are issuing an urgent appeal for information about the whereabouts of a vulnerable missing man with a life-threatening condition on the Isle of Wight.

Officers have concerns for the welfare of Khalil-Ur Rahman, also known as Melroy Robinson, who was reported missing from Lewisham Hospital in London earlier this week.

Isle of Wight Duty Inspector Terry Clawson said: “Mr Rahman is believed to have driven to the Isle of Wight where we spotted him in the Shanklin area earlier today (Sunday, August 5, 2012).

“The missing man is understood to have a life-threatening medical condition, which requires urgent treatment. Police are appealing directly to him to contact police or a hospital as soon as possible.

“Mr Rahman’s behaviour is known to be unpredictable because of his vulnerable condition. If approached, he can become distressed and agitated.

“A man matching Mr Rahman’s description is believed to have assaulted a female police officer in Landguard Road in Shanklin this morning (Sunday) when she attempted to check his welfare and identity. The officer received minor injuries.

“Although there is no information to suggest Mr Rahman intends to harm members of the public, our advice to people is to contact the police immediately by phoning 999 if you see him.”

Mr Rahman is described as:

• 38 years old
• Black
• 5 ft 11 ins tall
• Dark short Afro hair.
• A dark beard
• Slim build
